We recommend that you do it regularly if you want a healthy lawn in the garden, otherwise, the grass will turn yellow, the blades will be thin and fragile, and the weeds will be prolific. Lawn mowing is the solution for a dense, lush-looking lawn. Moreover, mowing gives the lawn a greater resistance to traffic and reduces weeds. Although it can take a long time, the benefits of this activity will convince you that it is worth investing your time in mowing the lawn correctly. Frequency, mowing height and tools are among the factors that contribute to a healthy lawn.

ESSENTIAL LAWN CUTTING RULES

Mow only a third of the length of the lawn. If you cut it shorter, it will lose its vigour.

It is ideal to mow the lawn once or twice a week during periods of accelerated growth, and during periods of normal growth three times a month. You will notice the differences with the growth of the lawn.

Most types of lawn mowers require a height of 3 cm. In areas where traffic is heavier, you can leave it higher, 4-5 cm. In the shade the lawn can be maintained even at a height of 6-7 cm.

Garden Services Adjust height accordingly. You can leave the lawn higher at the beginning and end of the season, but especially in drought conditions. Longer blades of grass retain moisture and help keep the lawn green, but also shade the soil, which is beneficial in hot weather.

Lawn mowing is done only when the grass and soil are dry.

Freshly sown grass should not be mowed immediately. Wait until it grows to a height of 7-10 cm.

Do not leave the mowed grass on the lawn but turn it into compost.

For a professional look, mow the lawn to the very edges.

When choosing a lawn mower, make sure it is tailored to the needs of your garden.

Adjust the cutting height according to the type of lawn you have in the garden.

Bonus tip: Although it is very necessary, mowing the lawn is stressful for the grass, and during a drought it can lead to increased sensitivity. To provide the necessary nutrients, make sure that after cutting, apply fertilisers occasionally, with the frequency mentioned on their packaging.

And now, let us go into detail with all the rules of good lawn mowing.

  1. RULE OF 1/3

The grass is cut only at the tips, 1/3 of its length. It is not recommended to mow more than a third of the height of the lawn, only if the lawn is extremely healthy. However, if you do repeat this short lawn mowing, unpleasant side effects will begin to occur. These effects include:

Increased vulnerability to pests and diseases.

Reducing the grass area, which makes the area insufficient for food production and photosynthesis.

More light for weed seeds, which will allow them to germinate and grow.

Damage to the crown of the blades, where the growth of the blades is generated and where the nutrients are stored;

The risk of soil compaction, which makes it difficult to drain and aerate the soil in a developed way.

Even if the recommended height is 3 cm, if you let it grow more, always follow the rules of the third. Bringing the lawn to the right height will be done gradually.

  1. FREQUENCY OF MOWING THE LAWN

The regulated and dense mowing of the lawn leads to its thickening and a beautiful appearance like that of a football or golf course. If you let the grass grow too much, you will notice that it starts to turn yellow at the tips, and the general appearance will not be the desired one.

The first spring cut should be done after there is no danger of snow. It is also recommended to mow the lawn, repair damaged areas, and prepare the ground for the new season, such as aeration.Garden Services

During periods of intense spring growth, between March and May, make sure you mow the lawn once a week or even several times if the lawn grows fast enough. At first you will be able to get into a trimming routine once a week. The heat slows down the growth rate, so it is possible to notice that at the end of the summer and in the dry periods you can decrease the frequency of mowing. In hot months you can slow down the action, even trimming three times a month.

In the autumn months, return to the spring program, i.e., the regular mowing every week, until the temperatures become low. This is the time when you will make one last pruning of the year, 3-4 cm from the ground.

The healthiest cutting program is the regular one. Thus, the grass will visibly thicken, and the weeds will not have the opportunity to develop because they will be suffocated by the grass. Try to perform this procedure at the same time interval, adjusting the duration according to temperature and humidity.

In hot weather, cutting in the morning or in the evening is preferable. Considering the need for the grass to be dry when you want to shorten it, do not forget to turn off the irrigation system on the day of mowing.

  1. GRASS CUTTING HEIGHT

In general, the lawn is kept trimmed to 3 cm. Under certain conditions, however, this height may differ. Such a situation is represented by the colder periods when it is advisable to leave the blades 1-2 cm longer than usual. The same rule applies to shaded areas. The grass in the shade of the trees is in direct competition with their roots for water and nutrients. Lack of light slows down photosynthesis and growth is more difficult than in sunny areas. You may have noticed this, so when it comes to germination, the seeds in the shade tend to delay their development a bit.

Garden ServicesIn terms of season, spring and autumn mow the lawn to 3-5 cm, and during hot and dry summers keep its height at 5-7 cm to keep its moisture. For the cold season, other preparations are needed, the last pruning being one of the most important. Mow when the weeds stop growing. For the sunlight, heat, and fresh air to reach the ground, the lawn prepared for winter must be 3-4 cm high.

When you start mowing the lawn, adjust the cutting height only once for each area. When you move to another area where the height differs, such as a tree-shaded area, adjust the machine again to mow the grass to a height of 1 cm and continue.

A thicker lawn with a higher height will give the lawn a silky look. On the other hand, mowing the lawn at 3 cm will get rid of ticks. To make the right choice for your garden, it is good to know from the beginning what your expectations are regarding the appearance and the conditions in the garden, which will also dictate the ideal pruning height.

  1. ADAPTATION OF CUTTING TO THE SEASON AND THE STAGE OF LAWN DEVELOPMENT

Of course, the natural growth rate of the lawn will also affect the frequency and height at which you must maintain it. In general, in spring it should be mowed more often because it is a time when the growth rate is accelerated. You may need to trim it even twice a week to keep it at 3-5 cm. As summer approaches and the heat slows down, you can continue trimming once a week, but the heat allows you to reduce it to even 3 sessions in a month. The autumn regime is like that of spring because the growth is accelerating again and you need to increase the frequency again, even with a trim every week.

These rules apply to an already developed lawn, but freshly sown lawn does not follow the same rules. The seeds must first germinate, and you can easily let the lawn reach 7-10 cm before the first mowing. Rather, this action is to level the lawn and prepare it for the next mowing. And in this case do not shorten it by more than a third of the initial height. Gradually you will reach the height at which you want to maintain the lawn.
